How to spot a fake
Practical checks you can do before and after you buy.
Counterfeits get better every year, but they still slip up in the same places. These checks work for most products.
Before you buy
- Be careful with prices far below what the brand's own shops charge. Genuine stock has a cost floor.
- Check that the seller is named and verified. Anonymous sellers are the main source of fakes.
- Look for a brand name, model number and warranty period in the listing. Vague listings are a warning sign.
When it arrives
- Packaging: printing should be sharp and spelling correct. Check for a model number and serial number on both the box and the product.
- Weight and feel: fakes are often lighter, with rough seams or loose parts.
- Serial numbers: many brands let you check a serial number on their own website.
- Skincare and makeup: look for a batch number and an expiry date, and check the seal is unbroken.
